Teachers at Ten Region 8 Schools to Undergo Professional Development

MAY 23, 2006 - Posted at 7:50 a.m. CST

LITTLE ROCK, AR - State officials say teachers at 36 Arkansas schools, including ten in Region 8, that have not made adequate progress over the last four years under the federal No Child Left Behind Act will undergo further training.  The state Education Department said yesterday that the additional training is intended to help improve student achievement.

The Education Department has contracted with a firm called America's Choice for $6 million, mostly in federal funds, to carry out the training at the 36 schools.  That's according to department spokeswoman Julie Johnson Thompson.

The Region 8 schools by district are...

-Augusta (Augusta Elementary)

-Hughes (Hughes High School, Mildred Jackson Elementary)

-Marked Tree (Marked Tree Elementary)

-Newport (Gibbs Albright Elementary)

-Trumann (Cedar Park Elementary)

-Turrell (Turrell High School)

-West Memphis (Jackson Elementary, Wonder Elementary)

-Wynne (Wynne Junior High School).
