Jonesboro, AR--Tiffany Blankenship Reports

Tax Dollars Staying at Home

May 25, 2006--Posted at 10:00 pm

JONESBORO-- It looks like Craighead County taxpayers are spending their dollars here at home.

The latest reports show a significant increase in receipts that officials say they expect to continue to rise.

Officials say another good month for sales and use tax receipts is a sign of things to come...

Craighead County Treasurer Russell Patton says, "May of 2006 is 10 percent ahead of May of 2005."

With the addition of the new Mall at Turtle Creek, reports should be even better next month...

But although the mall is already collecting sales tax, residents will have to wait to see the results or increase.

"I think everybody's is waiting until we get our June figures because there's a two months lag in the time we get the money back from the State of Arkansas," Patton says.

Patton says whether the increase is due to a growth in population or business, the results show, shoppers are spending they're dollars here at home.

A goal, developers hoped they'd reach when building the new mall.

City officials will cross they're fingers hoping the next reports will show the Mall at Turtle Creek is the addition they hoped it'd be.

"With 85 new stores or there about opening, it's going to be a huge increase," Patton says.

Patton says the next reports will be in around the 20th of next month, and of course we'll keep you updated on the results.
