MEMPHIS, TN - A Memphis morning anchorman told a Shelby County judge yesterday he plans on returning to Maryland to face charges that he raped a young girl 30 years ago.

Ron Meroney, an anchor at Fox 13 television station, was arrested May 3 after a Maryland grand jury returned indictments alleging he raped a girl under the age of 14 in 1974.

Meroney was contesting a fugitive from justice charge in court, which will be dropped when Meroney turns himself into authorities in Maryland.

Meroney's attorney said his client intends to return to Maryland, where the rape allegedly occured.

Attorney Mark Messler said Meroney is innocent and he wants to prove his innocence in court.
