Governor Taps New Leader for Arkansas National Guard

MAY 31, 2006 - Posted at 1:35 p.m. CST

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Major General Ron Chastain, who commanded the Arkansas 39th Infantry Brigade, was named today by Governor Huckabee to lead the Arkansas National Guard.

Major General Don C. Morrow announced his retirement in April as adjutant general of the state Guard.

Chastain, who lives in Conway, was in charge of about 3,000 Arkansas soldiers during their 18-month campaign in Iraq.  The brigade is made up of 47 units from around the state, including Conway's B company.

The 55-year-old Chastain began his military career when he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army Reserve in 1972.

Huckabee says a factor in his decision was finding someone who'd served in the field during the global war on terror.

Chastain takes over as adjutant general July 15.
