City Officials Fret as Little Rock Records 33rd Homicide

JUNE 6, 2006 - Posted at 3:18 p.m. CST

LITTLE ROCK, AR - As the death toll from homicides grows, Little Rock's mayor is worried that some sort of "war on the street" is behind the spate of killings that has reached 33 this year.

Four people were killed Monday alone.

The bodies of two men were discovered Monday morning near the entrance of Hindman Park, a city-owned golf course.  Police say the deaths could be connected to the slaying of a man Sunday at a site seven blocks away.

Monday's third homicide happened at 9:54 p.m. at 6320 Butler Road, in an apartment complex on the east side of South University Avenue from Hindman Park.  Police released few details Monday night about the murder, only that two men got into an argument and one shot the other.

The fourth slaying was on East 27th Street just after 11 p.m.  Little Rock police spokesman Sergeant Terry Hastings said investigators were still working to confirm the victim's identity.

Little Rock's homicide rate is greater than it was in 1993, when gang-related violence caused a sharp upturn.  That year, 76 killings occured in the city, 68 of them murders.
