Union Says Federal Lock-Ups Put Staff at Risk

JUNE 9, 2006 - Posted at 7:51 a.m. CST

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Senator Mark Pryor says he might support a request for a major boost in funding for federal prisons.  A national union says guard shortages are making it too dangerous for the corrections officers who are on duty.

Shon Foreman, president of a union local at the Forrest City federal prison, says business office clerks and secretaries have been pressed into duty.

Pryor, a Democrat, is collaborating with Pennsylvania Republican Senator Rick Santorum on a letter proposed for circulation among members of the Senate, calling for more money to hire more prison staff members.

But a Pryor spokesman says the senator had not committed himself to signing the letter.  She says Pryor became aware of the issue during a recent visit with employees of the Forrest City prison.

A spokesman for the Federal Bureau of Prisons says the agency is adequately staffed.
