State Departments in Missouri Downplay Illegal Immigration Effect

JEFFERSON CITY, MO - Missouri law officers and educators estimate that illegal immigrants are a small percentage of the people they work with.

Representatives from the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the departments of corrections, education and social services told a House immigration committee that illegal immigration isn't a big issue for them.

Republican Ed Lemery of Lamar is the panel's chairman.  He says the committee is trying to figure out where illegal immigrants are interacting with state departments and what the effect of that is.

The panel has plans to meet several more times to take testimony in Troy, Kansas City, Springfield and eastern Missouri.
