Crittenden County Authorities Arrest Suspect in Murder of Woman

JUNE 9, 2006 - Posted at 8:59 a.m. CST

WEST MEMPHIS, AR - Crittenden County authorities have arrested a Senatobia, Mississippi man for his alleged role in the recent murder of a West Memphis woman.

Thomas Powers, 40, was arrested yesterday in connection with the slaying of 44-year-old Pamela Sue McWhirter, whose body was recently found by fishermen near the Rock Island-Engineers overpass of Interstate-55, just outside of the West Memphis city limits.

A crime lab report indicates that McWhirter died from "blunt force trauma."

Powers is charged with first degree murder.  Investigators say he picked McWhirter up in a bar in Crittenden County before killing her.
