100-Vote Swing Changes Apparent Winner of Senate Race in Region 8

JUNE 15, 2006 - Posted at 3:47 p.m. CST

FORREST CITY, AR - Clerks made a 100-vote error when transcribing information from a St. Francis County precinct Tuesday.  An election commissioner says the move shortchanged a state Senate candidate who now is the apparent winner of the race.

Unofficial results had shown Arnell Willis defeating Jack Crumbly by 28 votes Tuesday night in the race that covers portions of Crittenden, Lee, Phillips and St. Francis counties.  If the change is certified as it stands now, Crumbly would win by 72 votes.

St. Francis County Election Commission Chairman Frederick Freeman says one precinct gave Crumbly only 74 votes from a paper ballot tabulator when he should have had 174.

Willis says he intends to sue.

The county delayed certification of ballots from Friday to Monday to give candidates time to conduct their own reviews of the Democratic Party primary.
