Drought Conditions Return to Region 8

JUNE 16, 2006 - Posted at 7:39 a.m. CST

LITTLE ROCK, AR - The National Weather Service in North Little Rock says that, after a brief respite last month from a year-long drought, rainfall totals for Arkansas have been below normal for the past 30 days.

Mid-May to Mid-June is typically a wet period of the year for the state, but Arkansas received just half of its normal precipitation.  Nine cities recorded less than ten percent of normal.

Communities in the northeast portion of the state are faring the worst, as Batesville, Jonesboro, Newport and West Memphis have gone two weeks or more since last having rain.  West Memphis also was nearly five inches of rainfall below normal, more than any other place in the state.

Some light relief may be on the way in the Jonesboro area.  K8 forecaster Chris Castleman expects rainfall by Saturday afternoon, but less than a half-inch of precipitation is expected.
