New Poll: McCaskill Leading Talent for Senate Seat

JUNE 26, 2006 - Posted at 7:52 a.m. CST

ST. LOUIS, MO - A new poll says State Auditor Claire McCaskill is slightly ahead of Senator Jim Talent in their race for the U.S. Senate.

The poll was conducted for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and KMOV-TV.  It shows Democratic challenger McCaskill favored by 49 percent, compared with 43 percent for Republican incumbent Talent.  The margin of error was 3.5 percent.

The telephone poll of 800 likely Missouri voters was conducted last week by Maryland-based Research 2000.

Last week, a Wall Street Journal poll showed Talent leading McCaskill by five percentage points with a similar margin of error.

The poll also shows likely voters support proposals to allow stem cell research in Missouri, restore Medicaid coverage to 90,000 residents, increase the state's minimum wage and increase the state's tobacco tax.
