NEWARK, AR - A three-pound baby girl is in good shape after she was delivered Wednesday in an emergency caesarean section following an accident involving the pick-up truck her mother was driving and a dump truck. That's according to State Trooper Lorelei Sellers.
The trooper said yesterday that 24-year-old Elizabeth Ball of Newport and her baby daughter were both doing well after the infant was delivered Wednesday in Batesville.
Sellers said Ball was trying to make a U-turn from the shoulder of Arkansas 69 near Newark when she pulled into the path of the dump truck. Ball was taken to White River Medical Center in Batesville, where the baby was delivered. After the emergency delivery, the baby was flown by helicopter to Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock.
The driver of the dump truck, 32-year-old Billy Richardson of Sulphur Rock, was also taken to the Batesville hospital and later released. A passenger in the dump truck, 72-year-old Sammy Simmons, was taken to Harris Hospital at Newport and died yesterday afternoon of injuries he suffered in the accident.
