Independence Day Festivities Set Across Northeast Arkansas

JULY 3, 2006 - Posted at 2:29 p.m. CST

JONESBORO, AR - Fireworks, concerts, professional wrestlers, runners and politicians will mark Independence Day across northeast Arkansas.

The Fourth falls on Tuesday, so many in Region 8 are taking a long holiday weekend.

In Jonesboro, KAIT and the Triple-FM Radio Group will team up tomorrow night for Freedom Fest, the state's largest free fireworks show.  The event begins at 9:30 p.m. at the Northeast Arkansas District Fairgrounds, and will feature a computerized fireworks extravaganza set to patriotic music.  The event will be broadcast live on KAIT's digital channel 8-2 and K8 24/7 weather (digital), as well as KAIT8.com and the Triple FM radio stations.

Meanwhile at Craighead Forest, the annual '4th in the Forest' activities are planned.  The event will feature live music, magicians, professional wrestling and fireworks, and is co-sponsored by Clear Channel Radio.

Also in Jonesboro, the city's Parks & Recreation Department will host the Freedom 5K Run & Walk, which begins at 8 a.m. at Access #6 in Craighead Forest.

Elsewhere in Region 8, Corning will host a parade at 9 a.m., to be followed by the community's 62nd Annual Homecoming Picnic at Wynn Park.

Independence Day picnics and related activities will also be held in Corning, Piggott, Portia and Pocahontas.  Several elected officials and politicians will also be on hand to speak at most of these events.
