Supporters Say New East Arkansas Highway Could Aid Disaster Evacuations

JULY 5, 2006 - Posted at 7:19 a.m. CDT, updated at 1:51 p.m.

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Highway officials say a connector between Interstates 40 and 55 near Brinkley is long overdue.

Supporters say the road would be convenient and would help the region's economy.  Backers also say a highway linking Brinkley to Clarksdale, Mississippi, would provide an alternate evacuation route for Interstate 40 or 55 if an earthquake strikes.

Officials from the Delta Regional Authority discussed the connector at a meeting in June.  Supporters are now expected to sign off on the plan and start the process of trying to get the project approved by federal transportation officials.

K8 reporter Brandi Hodges will have more on this story tonight on K8 News at Six.
