JULY 17, 2006 - Posted at 11:23 a.m. CDT

MEMPHIS, TN - Southeast Missouri State Representative Otto Bean, Jr. lost his two-year battle with leukemia last night in a Memphis hospital.

His staff released the news of Bean's death this morning, saying he died peacefully in his sleep at approximately 10 p.m. at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis, with his family at his side.  Bean was 68.

Bean is remembered as a longtime agricultural leader, farmer and agri-businessman from Holcomb, in Dunklin County.  He represented the 163rd district in the Missouri Legislature for two terms.  Bean made history in 2002 when he was elected the first Republican to represent the 163rd district in the Missouri House.

He is survived by his wife, a sister, and several children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Memorial services are set for 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Kennett.  The Bean family has requested that memorial donations be made to the Wings Cancer Foundation (www.wingscancerfoundation.org),  or the University of Missouri Delta Research Center (http://aes.missouri.edu/delta/index.stm).
