HEBER SPRINGS, AR - An environmental group is hoping to stop powerboat racing on Greers Ferry Lake.

The Committee for the Preservation of Greers Ferry Lake has gathered more than 1,300 signatures on a petition opposing ocean powerboat races.  The group says the boats reach speeds of nearly 200 miles an hour, are loud and dangerous.  The petitions were presented to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which oversees the lake, and to the Arkansas Parks and Tourism Commission.

The commission is considering whether to provide $25,000 for the races.  It plans to vote on the proposal tomorrow at Lake Dardanelle State Park in Russellville.  The Arkansas Sierra Club, the Save Greers Ferry Lake group, and several fishing clubs also against helping fund the races.
