Paragould Woman Charged in Quorum Court Member's Death

JULY 24, 2006 - Posted at 7:55 a.m. CDT

JONESBORO, AR - A manslaughter charge and four counts of second-degree battery have been filed against a Paragould woman accused in an accident last spring that killed a member of the Greene County Quorum Court.  Four other people were injured in the accident on March 21.

Craighead County Deputy Prosecutor Mike Walden filed the charges, all of them felonies, against 48-year-old Judy Cozart.  Police say she was driving a sport-utility vehicle on U.S. 49 when it crossed the center line and hit an oncoming vehicle.

Greene County Justice of the Peace Mark Reed of Paragould was killed in the accident.

Cozart appeared with her attorney for a bond hearing last week and was released on her own recognizance.  She was told not to use alcohol or drugs or misuse any prescription medications.  She is to appear in Craighead County District Court on August 18 for plea and arraignment.
