ROCKAWAY BEACH, MO - Two years ago a state ballot measure to allow casino gambling in Rockaway Beach failed.
Now city leaders are weighing a new proposal for a $144 million casino they hope would bring jobs and development to the Lake Taneycomo resort town.
One proposal has emerged after the city requested new bids in April. That plan was presented at a meeting yesterday attended by about 65 people.
If a contract is approved, there would be a petition drive to place a state constitutional amendment on the November 2008 ballot to allow the casino on the White River in Rockaway Beach.
Opponents in nearby Branson said they would again campaign against legalizing gambling in Rockaway Beach. They believe it would threaten Branson's reputation as a family resort and would hurt tourism.
