July 31, 2006 -- 1:55 AM CDT

JONESBORO, AR -- Sgt. 1st Class Earnest Lee Clemons was the man of the hour Sunday as friends and family welcomed him home.

Clemons spent the last 18 months in Afghanistan, and returned to the states on Independence Day.

"We were able to look out the windows and we saw the fireworks going off," said Clemons.  "We looked on the right and saw it, and looked on the left.  It was just an adrenaline rush...just to know that we were back in the United States, and to see the fireworks...and that it was not anything coming at you to harm you," he added.

He just recently arrived in Jonesboro, and said that he didn't expect to be greeeted with a surprise party.

"It just touches your heart to know that people care that much about me...care that much about our family, and they care that much about the liberty that we have here in the United States," he said.

Clemons was joined by his wife, daughter, mother and a host of brothers and sisters.  He said he's very proud to be an American, and that he's enjoying his freedom.
