SALT LAKE CITY, UT - A Region 8 woman is recovering from injuries she sustained in a harrowing experience last week in Utah.

Vicki Rhodes, 50, of Salem, is a traveling nurse who had just arrived for a three-month assignment in Salt Lake City on Wednesday, when she awoke to a fire in her third-floor apartment.  The fire had quickly engulfed her apartment, leaving her with no other option for escape but to jump from the window.  "I went back to the bedroom, kicked out the screen, sat on the ledge, hollered for help and jumped," she told Salt Lake City ABC affiliate KTVX.  "I wasn't going to burn, I wasn't going to die and that was my only other option."

After landing on the concrete below, Rhodes suffered several broken bones in both of her feet, as well as several bruises, smoke inhalation and burns to her fingers.

Two other people also jumped from the burning building, but weren't hurt near as badly.

Rhodes is currently recovering in a Salt Lake hospital, but is expected to be confined to a wheelchair for at least three months.  She is scheduled to return to Arkansas later this week, and is expected to rehabilitate in Jonesboro.
