Huckabee: Day Will Come When Cigarettes No Longer Sold

AUGUST 2, 2006 - Posted at 2:57 p.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Governor Huckabee predicts that cigarettes eventually won't be sold because of their health risks.  The governor says if cigarettes were introduced to the marketplace today, they wouldn't sell.  He says they sell now because back when cigarettes first came on the market, their deadly harmful effects were unknown.

The governor supported a statewide ban on smoking in the workplace that went into effect last month.  Civil penalties for violations are in effect.  Criminal penalties go into effect August 10.  At least 130 businesses have applied for an exemption to the ban.
