Jonesboro Aldermen Approve More Drainage Contracts

AUGUST 3, 2006 - Posted at 6:26 p.m. CDT

JONESBORO, AR - The Jonesboro City Council approved contracts this afternoon to improve drainage in three areas of the city that are prone to flooding.

The plans are to improve drainage along Flemon Road, Washington Avenue and West Highland Drive.  The city's next step is to consider plans and accept bids for the projects, which are expected to be underway by October.

Mayor Doug Formon told K8 News the projects are greatly needed, and long overdue.  "This is just something that has built up year after year after year, these three projects we identified today," said Formon.  "One was annexed in some years ago.  It was a county area which is now in the city, but the county and the state have worked closely with us to get that one worked out along Flemon Road.  These other two are down in older areas of the city, and back in the days when they were developed, drainage just wasn't an issue.  It wasn't a hot topic like it is today."

The estimated costs for the three projects approved today is $300,000.
