MALDEN, MO -- Many merchants in Missouri have sweetened the deal this weekend for shoppers by offering discounts on school items.

"It's the tax-free weekend that Missouri has," said Matt Richardson, Store Manager of Wal-Mart in Malden, MO.  "This is the third year in a row....as far as I know, they do it the first weekend in August," he said.

Some shoppers got an early start Saturday morning to get the tax break, and Wal-mart employees were prepared for the high volume of customers.  All of the shelves in the 'back to school section' were full, and everything was in stock.

Christy Everett was in the store bright and early taking advantage of the deal.

"I bought school supplies....pencils, notebooks, folders, glue...just the regular stuff," she said.

The items that that are tax-free during the weekend are:  school supplies that are under $50 per item; clothes and footwear under $100 per item; computer software under $350; and personal computers under $3,500.

The tax-free holiday ends at midnight on Sunday, August 6.
