JONESBORO, AR - Arkansas Secretary for Agriculture Richard Bell spotted a deficiency when he was in northeast Arkansas back in February...Jonesboro had no farmers market.
The scene Bell took in on Saturday allowed him to put a check by that item on his list.
About two months ago, the Arkansas State University Regional Farmers' Market started business at a field near the intersection of Aggie Road and Stadium Boulevard.
During his visit Saturday, Bell saw patrons buying products that ranged from fresh flowers to crafts to fruits and vegetables.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture lists 47 farmers markets in Arkansas, including the new one in Jonesboro.
Bell says farmers markets have grown to the point that the markets have a political agenda. Bell says next year he will work with the Legislature on issues that include health regulations and sales taxes at the markets.
