WASHINGTON - Republican Senator Jim Talent and Democratic candidate Claire McCaskill both won handily in their primaries, setting up a widely anticipated showdown in November's general election.
Talent trounced four unknown GOP candidates to win his party's nomination. He pledged to run a vigorous campaign to keep his seat, targeted by Democrats who want to win back control of the Senate.
McCaskill, the state auditor, defeated Bill Clinton Young of Kansas City.
Talent says it's going to be a close election, and Missouri is a swing state where he will have to run vigorously.
McCaskill says she needs to campaign in every corner of the state, and not just in the traditional Democratic stronghold.
