Department of Heritage to Unveil Trail of Tears Exhibit in Cross County

AUGUST 9, 2006 - Posted at 5:08 p.m. CDT

WYNNE, AR -  A new exhibit commemorating Region 8's role in moving thousands of American Indians to Oklahoma as part of the Trail of Tears will be unveiled tomorrow at the Village Creek State Park near Wynne.

The original Trail of Tears Historic Trail, designated in 1987 by Congress, commemorates the removal of the "five civilized tribes" from the eastern United States.  The Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Muscogee and Seminole were moved westward in the 1800s.

The panels are part of a series that are being dedicated today and tomorrow.  One exhibit was dedicated today in North Little Rock at the city's Riverfront Park.

Representatives of the Department of Arkansas Heritage, Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, National Park Service and Trail of Tears Association are due in Cross County on Thursday.
