Record-Holding Watermelon Grower Dies at 92, in Hope

HOPE, AR - Ivan Bright, who grew world record-sized watermelons in Hope, has died at the age of 92.  Bright died Saturday, on the 30th anniversary of the Hope Watermelon Festival.

Bright held the world watermelon record for a 268.8-pound Carolina Cross watermelon.  The melon was grown in Bright's watermelon patch in the Rocky Mound community.

Bright first claimed a spot in the Guiness Book of World Records in 1979 with a 200-pound melon.  Fifteen years later, the Bright family again took the record with a 260-pound watermelon.

Hope Mayor Dennis Ramsey said Bright brought notoriety to the Hempstead County town because of his abundant watermelon patch.

Ramsey says Bright was a "very kind man who will be very much missed."

    According to the Associated Press, Kenneth Williams received a lethal injection Thursday night at the Cummins Unit prison at Varner for killing a former deputy warden after he escaped from prison in 1999.
