Arkansas Edition of Math Textbook Focuses on Benchmark Exams

JONESBORO, AR -- Will a special edition math book bring up benchmark test scores for students at Jonesboro Public Schools?

Students from Kindergarten to 6th grade will be using a special Arkansas edition of their math books.

"What makes it the Arkansas Edition is that the company has correlated their math textbook with the Arkansas frameworks," said Jeanne Glover, K-12 Math Specialist for Jonesboro Public Schools.

As many parents have learned over the past few years, those ''frameworks'' are very important for the success of all students.

"The Arkansas frameworks are the set of student learning expectations that the state has for each grade level," said Glover.

The book is specifically designed to help students succeed when they take the benchmark exam.  Teachers say they hope by using the special edition of the math book that students will be more prepared at the end of the year.

"I do think it is going to help.  I think it makes them more attentive to the work that they're doing when they can relate to any scenario or problem," said Jonesboro Public School Math Coach, Melissa Gammill.

In addition to being made specifically for Arkansas testing, the textbook also has a visible Arkansas connection.

"Students can turn and see pictures of places.  There are some pictures of state parks and some of the great outdoor additions.  They'll see applications to real world problems based on Arkansas places," said Glover.

While having this Arkansas edition makes the students feel special, it's also having an impact on the teachers.

"I think they've been pretty excited to see a textbook that they believe was developed for Arkansas," said Glover.

In addition to using the book, students are also given real life situations where they can use math.
