Batesville Man Among Those Killed in Maine Slayings

SEPTEMBER 6, 2006 - Posted at 7:35 a.m. CDT

NEWRY, MAINE - Authorities in Maine say a Batesville man was one of four people killed Labor Day weekend by a 31-year-old cook accused of murdering and dismembering people at a bed-and-breakfast in Maine.

Christian Nielsen told detectives that his bloody rampage began Friday when he killed 50-year-old James Whitehurst of Batesville.  Whitehurst was staying at the Black Bear Bed & Breakfast in Newry, Maine.

According to an affidavit, Nielsen also killed three other people at the bed & breakfast this weekend.

Colonel Greg Poulin, chief of the Maine State Police, called the killings the state's worst homicide in 14 years.

Nielsen has been charged with four counts of murder.
