Future of Layaway Remains a Mystery at Wal-Mart

BENTONVILLE, AR - Does layaway have a future at Wal-Mart?

It all depends on who you talk to.  K8 News went in search of the answer after a viewer e-mailed the Newsroom, stating that she had heard a rumor that the Arkansas-based world's largest retailer is no longer making the policy available to customers, even with the holiday shopping season only a few months away.

K8 News contacted both Wal-Mart Supercenters in Jonesboro and was told by spokespersons at both stores that there were no plans at this time to change or scrap the layaway policies.  However, Marisa Bluestone in the Wal-Mart Corporate Communications Department in Bentonville issued the following statement to us this morning:

"At Wal-Mart, we are always looking at different ways to improve the shopping experience for our customers and keep prices low.  At this time, we cannot provide any specifics regarding layaway service.  However, I can tell you that we did not roll out layaway service in 13 stores that opened this month and we are currently analyzing results.  As always, we will communicate with out associates and customers as decisions are made."
