Murder Suspect Commits Suicide in Sharp County Jail

SEPTEMBER 13, 2006 - Posted at 2:19 p.m. CDT

ASH FLAT, AR - A man suspected in the beating death of a one-year-old child has been found dead in his cell in the Sharp County Jail.

Shane B. Haggins, 30, was found dead in his cell at 6:02 this morning.  The Sharp County Sheriff's Department says a "handwritten note was found in Haggins' cell, which is believed to have been written by Haggins, indicating his death was a result of a self-induced hanging."

Haggins had been incarcerated in Sharp County's jail since July 25, awaiting trial on capital murder charges.  He was arrested in April for the beating death of Lauren Rutledge, the infant daughter of a woman that Haggins' was living with in Cherokee Village at the time of the death, on April 6.

Haggins body will be sent to the state medical examiner for an autopsy, though foul play is not suspected.
