Court Denies Judge's Request to Open Disciplinary Hearing

SEPTEMBER 15, 2006 - Posted at 8:05 a.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK (AP) - A hearing is set for today at 11 a.m. over

complaints Judge Wendell Griffen violated a code of conduct with

his public speeches. The Arkansas Supreme Court yesterday denied

the appellate judge's attempt to open the hearing before a state

judicial panel to the public.

The hearing will be in front of the Arkansas Judicial Discipline

and Disability Commission.

The panel is conducting the hearing over public comments Griffen

made last fall. Griffen lambasted the government's response to

Hurricane Katrina, supported an increase in the minimum wage and

criticized a nomination by President Bush for the U.S. Supreme

Court.
