SPRINGDALE, AR - Health officials following up a case of tuberculosis from last spring at a middle school in Springdale have found nine students and a teacher have indications of the lung disease.
The students and the teacher at Hellstern Middle School will have to have chest X-rays. Fifty-five students, teachers and staff had positive results for a TB skin test, which was administered after school started. The ten with symptoms are being held out of school, pending results of the X-rays.
Tuberculosis was once one of the leading causes of death in the U.S. People with positive skin tests can be treated with a drug regimen.
Officials say the student who was ill initially has been treated and is no longer at the risk of infecting others.
