Bush Unaware of Alleged Pakistan Bombing Threat

SEPTEMBER 22, 2006 - Posted at 12:01 p.m. CDT

WHITE HOUSE - President Bush says he doesn't know about any conversation in which the U.S. vowed to bomb Pakistan "back to the Stone Age" if it didn't sign on to the war on terror.

The claim was made by Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf during a CBS interview.  But after the two men met today at the White House, Bush said the first he heard about it was in the morning paper.

Bush also says his recollection is that soon after the terror attacks, then-Secretary of State Colin Powell told him Musharraf wanted to help.

Musharraf was also asked about his claim at the same White House news conference.  His answer was that he couldn't comment before the release of his book.
