Little Rock Looks Ahead to 50th Anniversary of Central High Crisis

SEPTEMBER 25, 2006 - Posted at 4:49 p.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Central High School in Little Rock today marked the 49th anniversary of its integration.  The school dedicated ten marble benches on the campus to honor the "Little Rock Nine" and to honor the school's past, present and future students.

The ceremony took place before about 300 students and was decidedly low-key compared with the events officials say have they have planned to mark the 50th anniversary in 2007.

Next year, former President Clinton will highlight a ceremony at the school, and all living former presidents and all members of the United States Supreme Court have been invited to join in.

The anniversary week will also be marked by the opening of a new visitors center near the school and the display of the Emancipation Proclamation at the Clinton presidential library.
