Christmas Stockings for Soldiers

JONESBORO, AR -- A group of women in Region 8 are working together to provide the soldiers with the 875th Engineer Battalion a little Christmas cheer.

The women are piecing together Christmas stockings that they intend to stuff and send overseas.

"Every year Soldiers' Angels makes Christmas stockings for soldiers and sends them out.   I wanted to do it for the 875th, because I have already personally adopted one of the members of the 875th," said Debbie Johnson, a member of the Soldiers' Angels.

Everyone has a different talent, but for now, the volunteers are just trying to cut in a straight line.

"It is pretty easy.  I don't sew, so I just cut them out," said volunteer Raven Goodrich.

But here that's all it takes to help give our soldiers what they need.

"We're going to stock them with personal hygiene products, hard candy, chocolate, games... kind of give the guys a little extra Christmas cheer," said Goodrich.

There are volunteers with several different groups helping accomplish this goal.

"I'm a part of the Girl Scouts Council, but my brother is a part of the 875th, so it's a little bit personal for me," said Goodrich.

When the stockings are completed they'll be stuffed with items collected before being shipped off to soldiers overseas.

The Soldiers' Angels have a lot of help with this project, but more help is needed.

"We've had several business offer to be donation locations so that people can drop off things to fill the stocking with, we're also looking for money donations so we can pay for the postage," said Johnson.

One of the things the guys do need is phone cards.  If you would like to pick up a calling card to donate, the phone cards they need are AT&T international calling cards.

And Goodrich said her brother and the other soldiers are very appreciative off everything that is being done for them here in Region 8.

"We get emails from him every now and then and tell him how proud we are of him.  I was telling him what we are doing and he said the guys will just love that," said Goodrich.
