Formon Plans Mayor's Medal of Merit

OCTOBER 2, 2006 - Posted at 3:36 p.m. CDT

JONESBORO, AR - Jonesboro Mayor Doug Formon plans a black tie dinner affair soon to honor recipients of his first Mayor's Medals of Merit.  In a letter to sponsors, Formon said he conceived the idea during his campaign for the office.

"I wanted to create something that would use the power and image of the mayor's office to make charitable difference to our community.  So, after talking with my wife Cyndi, I decided to create an event that would recognize three individuals who had shaped Jonesboro," Formon wrote.  The mayor says each recipient will be chosen from different criteria.  One will be recognized as someone who has made a significant difference in a child's life.  The second recipient will be recognized as someone who has made a significant contribution to the city, and the third will be recognized as someone who has overcome a personal tragedy or setback, but have overcome the obstacle and made a difference for themselves and/or others.

This year, all proceeds raised from the event will be donated to CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates).

An exact date for the event has not yet been set.  The event will be co-sponsored by KAIT.
