Poll Shows that Huckabee's Popularity is Dropping

OCTOBER 3, 2006 - Posted at 3:50 p.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, AR - A poll shows that Governor Mike Huckabee, who has been spending more time out of state as his term approaches its end, is less popular with Arkansans.

The Stephens Media Group poll conducted last week said 48 percent of Arkansans approve of the job Huckabee is doing, down from 54 percent in August.  The poll has a margin of error of 4.5 percentage points.

Pollster Ernie Oakleaf says that Huckabee is spending his months as a lame duck by focusing on running for president.

Huckabee has said he is considering a run for president and has made numerous trips to Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, which select delegates early in the presidential nomination process.

Huckabee spokesman Alice Stewart said other recent polls had showed the governor with more favorable ratings, but did not name any specifically.

Opinion Research Associates surveyed 500 registered voters by telephone from September 26-30.
