Four Dead, Others Badly Injured in Morning Wreck in Memphis

OCTOBER 4, 2006 - Posted at 3:27 p.m. CDT

MEMPHIS, TN - An early-morning crash in Memphis has killed four people and badly injured five others.

Police Sergeant Vince Higgins says a tractor-trailer rig was stopped for a traffic signal on Lamar Avenue about 3:20 this morning when another 18-wheeler rear-ended it.

Higgins says a passenger vehicle was also involved in the crash.

One of the trucks caught fire and burned, leaving only a shell.  Higgins says one of the trucks was loaded with car batteries.

Police say five people were taken to hospitals, all in extremely critical condition and at least some suffering from burn injuries.

Lamar is a major traffic artery.  It's also Route 78, which leads into northern Mississippi.

At mid-morning, the debris had not been cleared and police were still investigating how the crash occured.
