Some Missouri Waters Not Meeting Federal Standards

OCTOBER 11, 2006 - Posted at 4:11 p.m. CDT

JEFFERSON CITY, MO - A state report released today says 82 bodies of water in Missouri don't meet federal clean water standards.

That's a drop from the 207 lakes, rivers and streams that were on the state Department of Natural Resources' 2002 list.

The list on this year's survey includes 77 rivers or streams and five lakes.  Of those, 40 are new to the list, and 42 were on the 2002 list.

The department said on its Web site that it proposed delisting 165 waters for various reasons.  But only 30 waterways were recommended to be taken off the list because the water actually met water quality standards or "measures have been put in place to address impairment."

The DNR plans five public meetings in October and November around the state to discuss the report and take comments on the proposed list.
