SPRINGFIELD, MO - A 13-year-old boy charged in a Joplin school shooting now faces a charge of attempted escape, after he tried to escape before a court hearing.

Juvenile authorities say the seventh grader tried to run away from staff as he was being led out of a cafeteria yesterday at the Jasper County Juvenile Detention Center.

The boy later appeared in juvenile court and was ordered held in detention for up to 30 days.

The boy's lawyer says the parents agreed with keeping him in detention.  The lawyer says the boy would be at the risk of attack from angry Joplin residents if he were released.

The boy faces three felony counts of first-degree assault, armed criminal action and making terrorist threats.  He is not being named because of his age.
