President of The Med to Step Down Amid Hospital's Troubles

MEMPHIS, TN - The CEO of the Regional Medical Center has resigned.

Dr. Bruce Steinhauer has been president of the Memphis hospital for nearly nine years.

"The Med" has the Level One trauma center for the region, which means it gets the most serious emergency room cases from West Tennessee, northern Mississippi and eastern Arkansas.

The board didn't call for Steinhauer's resignation, but accepted it, effective November 15.

The date coincides with a federal deadline for the hospital fixing deficiencies that could lead to loss of Medicare and Medicaid funding.

The 73-year-old Steinhauer says he wants to make sure the problems are fixed before he leaves.
