JPD Breaks Up Counterfeit Ring

OCTOBER 19, 2006 - Posted at 11:08 a.m. CDT

JONESBORO, AR - Jonesboro police have begun arresting people in a counterfeit money investigation.  Two women and a man were arrested yesterday after police say the three tried to pass fake $100 bills.  Police say they expect more arrests will be made.

Among the reports of fake money circulating in the city, a bail bondsman reported he received a counterfeit $100 bill from an inmate he had bailed out of jail.  Also, employees of a restaurant, a bank and a grocery store say they were given phony cash.

Police think the suspects are using an ink-removing substance to remove the dollar amount on a $5 bill, then somehow replace the figure with the image of a $100 bill.

Police are advising local businesses to inspect money closely during the next few days and to report any suspicious findings.
