Lt. Governor Candidates Tangle Over Funding for Shelters

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Democratic lieutenant governor nominee Bill Halter is criticizing opponent Jim Holt for voting against increased funding for battered women's shelters.  But Holt's campaign dismissed that criticism as using domestic violence for political gain.

Halter's campaign criticized Holt, a state senator from Springdale, for voting against legislation in 2003 that would have increased funding for battered women's shelters by increasing the marriage license fee.

Halter campaign manager Michael Cook says Holt's legislative record shows a "disregard for the most vulnerable Arkansans."

But Holt spokesman Dan Noble says Holt's mother was a battered wife from one of her ex-husbands and said Holt has counseled abused women through his church in Springdale.
