Legislators Complain About University Ad Competition

OCTOBER 25, 2006 - Posted at 7:12 a.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Some legislators are complaining that colleges and universities in the state are spending too much on advertising.

The schools spent close to $6 million on advertising last year, and some legislators say the money could be better spent.

University of Central Arkansas president Lu Hardin says campuses aren't competing against each other.  Hardin says the advertising helps keep Arkansas students in the state.

Hardin spoke yesterday during hearings on higher education budgets before the Legislative Council and Joint Budget Committee.
