Ethics Panel Says Jonesboro Candidate Can't Wear Judicial Robes

JONESBORO, AR - The state Judicial Ethics Advisory Committee says a candidate for circuit judge shouldn't wear judge's robes in campaign literature and advertising if that candidate is not the incumbent.

Former district judge Ray Spruell of Jonesboro is seeking the circuit judge seat in the Second Judicial District in northeast Arkansas and asked for the opinion.  Spruell wanted to know if a judicial candidate who is not an incumbent judge could be pictured in a judge's robe or seated at a judge's bench in campaign materials.  The panel advised against it, saying ethics rules say a candidate cannot misrepresent their present position or qualifications.
