Two Dead After Explosion at Hot Springs Aluminum Plant

OCTOBER 31, 2006 - Posted at 7:20 a.m. CST

HOT SPRINGS, AR - Two men were killed when an explosion occured today at an aluminum recycling plant outside Hot Springs.

Another worker at Arkansas Aluminum Alloys suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital.  Mike Shaw, the company's human resources and safety director, says the names of the workers were not released, pending notification of their families.

The explosions occured about 3:10 a.m. toward the rear of the production department where aluminum is melted down for recycling.  Shaw said there was no fire and no chemical release.

The company shut down power to the plant as a safety precaution and emergency workers were trying to determine what caused the explosion.

The plant operates around the clock and employs 30 people.
