Mother Charged with Killing Children Overdoses in Jail

NOVEMBER 3, 2006 - Posted at 7:53 a.m. CST

DE QUEEN, Ark. (AP) - Authorities say the woman charged with killing her three children in De Queen has been treated for an overdose of tranquilizers she allegedly took at the Sevier County Jail.

A guard on Tuesday noticed Eleazar Paula Mendez was lethargic and she was taken by ambulance to a De Queen hospital. She was transferred to a Texarkana hospital, where she was released Wednesday and taken back to the jail.

Sevier County Chief Deputy Kim Culp says it appears Mendez had hoarded Vallium she had been prescribed and took a large amount at one time. Culp says he does not know if the overdose was a suicide attempt.

Mendez is to be tried February 26 on three capital murder charges for the slayings of her children -- five-year-old twins Samuel and Samantha Morales and eight-year-old Elvis Morales.
