Arkansas Senators Tussle Over Proposed Rule Changes

NOVEMBER 9, 2006 - Posted at 8:00 a.m. CST

LITTLE ROCK (AP) - A bitter disagreement may await Arkansas legislators when they convene in January for the regular session.

The day after Democrats swept statewide offices and picked up three state House seats, senators gathered for an organizational meeting to prepare for the session. But during two hours of debate, senators loudly argued with each other over rule changes.

Even the timing for the gathering was up for debate.

The Senate did approve some proposals, however. They included changes to the way the chairman of the Senate Joint Budget Committee is elected and the way senior members could choose positions on committees.
