Militia Leader Jailed in Northwest Arkansas Gun Crackdown

NOVEMBER 10, 2006 - Posted at 3:35 p.m. CST

FAYETTEVILLE, AR - A man arrested by federal agents during a crackdown on illegal weapons is a leader of the Militia of Washington County.

Hollis Wayne Fincher, 60, was arrested Wednesday in a raid by Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents for alleged possession, manufacture and transfer of machine guns.

Fincher is a lieutenant commander of the militia group, which has a headquarters south of Fayetteville.  Fincher was being held in the Sebastian County jail without bail pending a detention hearing, which is set for 1:30 p.m. Monday in U.S. District Court in Fort Smith.

Federal authorities said the investigation into Fincher began in March, which was when The Morning News printed a story about him and had a picture of him holding an alleged automatic weapon.

Federal agents said they seized illegal firearms at Fincher's home, which is not far from the militia headquarters.
